Long ago, an emperor of India built a great tomb in memory of his favorite wife. When the tomb of white marble and red sandstone was finished, twenty years later, it was one of the most striking man-made sights in the world, just as the emperor vowed it would be.

The emperor named the tomb the Taj Mahal for his wife, Mumtaz-i-Mahal. His wife's name means "pride of the palace," and a taj is a crown.

Luanda is the World's Most Expensive City

According to a recent Cost of Living Survey conducted annually by Mercer Human Resource Consulting which ranks the world's most expensive cities this 2011, Angola's capital Luanda is the world's most expensive place to live for expatriates. It tops the list for the second year in running.

Reports say you'd pay $28 for a CD and about $20 for a club sandwich and a soda. Now, I wonder what kind of sandwiches they have there.

The city is currently undergoing a major reconstruction, with many large developments taking place that will alter the cityscape significantly. Add the fact that oil-rich Angola is a magnet for foreign workers who push up already high prices inflated by a reliance on imports.

Regarding the survey, various factors enter into a city's cost-of-living for expatriate employees, such as monetary value, consumer confidence, investment, interest rates, exchange rates of the country's currency, and housing costs. This list does not account for cost-of-living savings accrued to local citizens through government-subsidized housing, health care, and education, differences in taxation, and many other factors irrelevant to expatriates.

Do take note again that the survey is intended for expatriates and not for tourists.
